College Profile: Golf Academy of America-Orlando
SDGA is a unique concept in the field of education. It is dedicated to rigorous academic standards as well as enhancement of golf proficiency.
The mission of SDGA is to prepare qualified students for positions in golf complex operations and management. This is achieved through a curriculum that focuses on business management, the golf industry, modern teaching methods, and sound human relations skills. Excellence and continuous improvement in the provision of education and placement are at the core of SDGA�s philosophy.
The Academy offers a two-academic-year associate degree program with an occupational objective of Golf Complex Operations and Management, with two areas of emphasis: Golf Professional and General Golf Management. Students may choose to have a dual emphasis or choose to specialize in one area only. Although an area of emphasis is chosen, students will have the opportunity to supplement the designated golf curriculum with elective courses each semester.
The Academy offers three semesters per calendar year with most students completing all requirements in 16 consecutive months. The schedule is comprised of classroom instruction, golf instruction, tournaments, open play, and practice. The curricula include open play and tournament rounds every week and a comprehensive driving range package for student practice.
Golf Academy of America - Orlando, located in Orlando, Florida, provides the perfect environment for golfers and has been in operation since 1986. A new expansion in 2006, provides students with a 3300 square foot indoor training center and an additional 1300 square foot classroom dedicated to golf instruction. This classroom has the most advanced video golf instruction software available for students and faculty. Golf Academy of America - Orlando also has traditional classrooms, a computer lab, club repair shop, and a student lounge. In addition, library and student placement service areas, as well as administrative offices are housed in Golf Academy of America - Orlando’s comprehensive campus. Practice and playing opportunities are conducted at the many area golf facilities, contributing to an ideal setting for learning and student activities.
Orlando, annually hosts millions of tourists who have made the central Florida area an enormous year-round vacation spot. Unknown to many, the Central Florida area is considered the “new” golf capital of world. This allows students the chance to play a variety of the areas many golf courses. The Golf Channel is based in Orlando and produces shows such as Golf Academy Live. Central Florida is also the home of the PGA Golf Hall of Fame and the annual PGA Merchandise Show. Orlando hosts two PGA Tour events each year, The Bay Hill Invitational and The Disney Classic.

The purposes of the Academy are as follows:
1. To provide students with an educational background in business management and a solid foundation in general education.
2. To prepare students to ultimately assume positions in golf management at a country club, golf facility, or other golf related businesses.
3. To introduce students to the areas of specialization, including equipment technology, modern merchandising, computers for managing business activities and tournaments, and the growth of golf as a game and a business.
4. To teach the essentials of the business of golf and golf game so that students will develop to their full potential in the industry.
5. To prepare students to become effective and innovative golf instructors and managers.
6. To provide educational and training programs that satisfy the needs of students as well as those of the overall golf industry.
7. To expose students to the increasing sophistication of the golf industry and associated demand for multifaceted personnel who are able to assess and promote the objective of the employer(s).
