College Profile: Erskine College
The mission of Erskine College is to equip students to flourish by providing an excellent liberal arts education in a Christ-centered environment where learning and biblical truth are integrated to develop the whole person.
A strong academic reputation has always been an identifying mark of Erskine College, the oldest four-year church-related college in South Carolina. Erskine has produced leaders in nearly every area of endeavor. Almost all of our graduates who apply for medical or law school are admitted, and Erskine students are also successful in entering Ph.D. programs.
We are a Christian institution and that means we take seriously the faith-learning enterprise. Our job is not simply to transfer knowledge but to shape character and values and to help students understand the world in which they live. Our challenge is to preserve and pass on the Christian tradition while encouraging honest intellectual curiosity.
Erskine’s 90-acre campus in Due West, South Carolina, offers our students an idyllic setting for college life. Recently, Erskine invested more than $12 million on upgrading residence halls and addressing deferred maintenance. The campus is beautiful. A new music and math complex is currently under construction and should be completed early in 2008. Students fill the campus with youthful enthusiasm and take seriously their academic pursuits.
One outstanding characteristic of campus life at Erskine is the interest faculty and staff members take in the lives of our students. When a student has a need, help is available. Our professors serve as mentors for students outside the classroom and sometimes invite them into their homes for a meal.
The presence of Erskine Theological Seminary on our campus provides opportunities for friendship as well as academic and spiritual enrichment. Interested college students can benefit from shared seminary lecture series and other events.
We at Erskine are concerned about students’ social and intellectual development, but we also care about shaping their character. On our campus, students can be honest and open with each other. It is a place where strong human values are developed. As a Christian liberal arts college, we help students integrate faith and learning in ways that are wholesome and productive for living in society.
Erskine College is nestled in the academic village of Due West, a town of 1,200 residents located in historic Abbeville County, South Carolina, an area rich in colonial, Revolutionary War, and Civil War History. The town and the college, with a number of antebellum buildings, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. An annual spring festival brings a large number of tourists to share in the cultural and historic heritage of the county.
Due West is located near a number of lakes and recreational areas and within easy access to Interstate Routes 26 and 85 and the cities of Atlanta, Charlotte, Columbia, and Greenville. Greenwood and Anderson are each about 20 miles away. The town provides a restful and quiet atmosphere for study.
Erskine's spacious 90-acre campus provides both classic and modern facilities. The signature towers of the Erskine Building are complemented by a state-of-the-art science facility and a new music and math education complex. Centrally located on the campus is the Bowie Arts Center, a modern museum and gallery. The Galloway Activities Center contains two gyms, racquetball courts, an aerobics/weight room, a climbing wall, and an athletic training facility. The Literary Societies, as old as the college, are located on campus. Students eat at an award-winning cafeteria and in campus cafes.
