Trine University (formerly Tri-State University) is a private U.S. Midwest university with its main campus located in Angola, Indiana, along with branch campuses for the School of Professional Studies in South Bend, Merrillville, northern Angola, and Fort Wayne. Founded in 1884 as Tri-State Normal College, the university has been traditionally noted for its engineering program; however, it also offers degrees in arts & sciences, teaching, areas of business, entrepreneurship, and golf management. Trine University has also begun a masters program in engineering technology, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering. The School of Professional Studies also offers a masters of science in criminal justice at its Fort Wayne branch campus. For many years, its mascot was the Trojans, however Trine University changed their mascot to the Thunder in 1990. On August 1, 2008, Tri-State University formally changed its name to Trine University. On September 24, 2007, the university trustees announced that the university would be changing its name in response to the need to represent itself as a premier private institution; losing its reference to a state funded institution in its name as well as losing the geographic reference to the Tri-State area. The trustees have honored alumnus Ralph Trine (BSME '61) and his family with the renaming honors.
